Submission guidelines

MERJ offers a forum for the exchange of academic research into media education and pedagogy conducted by academics, practitioners and teachers situated in all sectors and contexts for media education.

Outcomes of research into any aspect of media education and / or media literacy education are welcome. Findings related to media education policy, media education practice / pedagogy, media literacy education and the use of media and technology in education are all of interest to the journal.

There are two options for submission:

* Full articles: 5000 – 7500 words (fully developed outcomes of research)

* MERJ Research Forum pieces: 1500 – 3000 words (interim research findings, ‘thought pieces’, research in development)

The standard MERJ submission conventions apply to this edition.

The editors welcome abstracts of no more than 250 words on proposed research reports and main articles.

Articles submitted to MERJ must be prefaced by names of authors and affiliations, the abstract, four keywords that relate to the stated themes of the journal as published on the call for papers and the address for correspondence of the lead author.

Manuscripts should be double-space and in Ariel font no less than size 12. Submissions can be made in either a Word document or in RTF format.

Footnotes are not required in submissions to MERJ.

All submissions should be in English and all authors are expected to obtain copyright on previously published material or images where appropriate. Unsolicited manuscripts will not be returned.

Formatting

UK or US spelling may be used with ‘-ize’ spellings as given in the OED (e.g. organize, recognize). Indicate italic type by underlining and use single quotation marks. Tables and figures should be clearly labelled and explained in the text and camera-ready artwork for all figures must be supplied. Essential footnotes should be indicated by superscript figures in the text and collected on a single page at the end of the article. References cited in the text should read thus: Smith (2008: 63-4), Smith and Jones (2008, 2009).

Please use ‘et al.’ when citing a work by more than two authors, e.g. Smith et al. (2008). The letters a, b, c etc. should be used to distinguish different citations by the same author in the same year, e.g. Jones (2008a, 2008b). All references cited in the text should be listed alphabetically and in full after the notes, using the following style:

Permission to Publish

Authors submitting a report, article or book review do so on the understanding that, if it is accepted for publication, exclusive copyright of the article shall be assigned to Auteur Publishing and the author will be required to sign a copyright indemnity declaration. Auteur will not charge authors who wish to use their articles again in publications they may subsequently write or edit.

Authors whose articles are accepted may be requested to provide both a hard copy and an electronic copy of their work. Authors must correct submissions promptly and not make revisions on them.
